Tailor’s Bunion (Bunionette)

A tailor’s bunion is an enlargement of the bone at the base of the small toe. It is similar to a bunion but on the outside of the foot. It is often causes by a biomechanical abnormality that is inherited. It can also be caused by a boney growth.

Symptoms

Similar to a bunion deformity the symptoms associated with a tailor’s bunion are commonly due to shoe irritation. Pain, redness and swelling over the bump are common symptoms as a result of shoe irritation.

Diagnosis

A tailor’s bunion is usually diagnosed based on clinical examination. X-rays are often taken to determine the extent and cause of the deformity.

Treatment

Treatment of a tailor’s bunion is designed to remove pressure from the bump. This can be achieved with wider shoes, OTC innersoles, Orthotic, and a variety of accommodative paddings. By removing irritation from the bump the inflammation should subside. Rest, ice and elevation can also be effective in decreasing inflammation. Should conservative treatment fail to alleviate the condition surgery may be an option. This can involve just removing a bump or moving the bone back in proper alignment. Recovery periods depend on the procedure performed.

Testimonials

I suffered with chronic heel pain for over a year. I finally went to see Dr. Fritz who examined me and performed X-rays on the same visit. He diagnosed me with plantar fasciitis. After a course of physical therapy, a cortisone shot and a pair of custom orthotics I’m able to walk pain free again.
